Sample Answer
The bar chart compares the 15 companies with the largest amounts of research spending (in billions of euros) in 2008.
The largest spender is Toyota. This Japanese company spends significantly more money on research than its’ nearest competitor, Microsoft (7.5 billion and 6.5 billion respectively.) Corporate research spending gradually declines as you move down to the 15th largest spender – IBM, which spends a little less than 4.5 billion.
Unsurprisingly, there are six automobile companies on the list. However, it is interesting to note that one in three of the companies listed are pharmaceutical companies. All of these are either American or European. Their research expenditure ranges from just under 6 billion (Roche) to around 4.5 billion (Sanofl-Aventis). The latter is the only French company on the list.
In conclusion, it can clearly be seen that although the list is dominated by American companies, there are also significant numbers of Japanese, German and Swiss companies.
